Reverend Josh

You know who I feel bad for? Nigerian princes and/or South African missionaries who really are just looking to rent their houses out to nice people. They're in a real tough spot.

Perusing craigslist today I came across a duplex in Salt Lake, nice location, good size, perfect price (not too unrealistic, but still a good deal), there were pictures and everything.

I emailed the person to find out more information.

They sent me back a novel about how they recently left on a mission to "South African" to spread God's good word and how they took the keys and paperwork back with them but could send them by courier as soon as I sent them my deposit.

I wrote back and asked if instead of just sending the deposit if I could send an entire years worth of rent, and while I was at it $1100 was too good of a deal, how about I pay them $1300 a month instead?

He wrote back and said that lots of people were wondering the same thing, but really two months worth of rent would be just fine.

Thank you Reverend! What a steal! If you really are out there serving a mission in South Africa"N" I feel really sorry for you because I don't think anyone is going to be renting your house. At least not anyone with a brain.

Kind of gets your spidey sense tingling, doesn't it?

That's very generous of you Kristi. I think the same gentlemen tried to buy my car when I posted it on KSL. He was going to pay me twice the asking price if....blah, blah, blah.
If people put as much time into working as they did into their scams they'd be millionaires.

Hate to admit that I got duped once. I had a Camry for sale and noticed a few others for sale for really cheap. I had to play in the current market, right? I sold my Camry for real cheap; the other Camrys for sale were just scams! Doh!

That's hilarious/crazy!

Same guy tried to buy my serger when I was selling it. Don't they read the "this is how people scam you" section???

Amen! Seriously. We are trying to rent our basement on Craigslist and I am ready to give up. It's like ants at a picnic with these scammers. Some of them are pretty funny, I recall getting one that said something like "I am wealthy doctor and am out of the state right now." As if a wealthy doctor would really say that. It makes me mad that people consider that their living, off to another 9 to 5 at the office.

Not sure if this is kind of what you were intentionally alluding to, but this post reminded me a lot of the Brian Reagan bit about how much he pities Arabian people who truly and sincerely want to get a career going in crop dusting. I'm too lazy but you should go find that on youtube and post it to go along with this post. Classic. Thanks for the laugh and for being a person with a brain--we need things to start going right with this move :)

I had this same thing happen to me when we were looking for places to rent. My thoughts were the same....you'd have to be really stupid to fall for this. Anyway, good luck finding something at a good price in Utah. Rent is super expensive there.

Rent expensive in Utah? Are you kidding? I guess I come from DC where I rented an 800 sq. foot apt. for $1200.00 a month!!! Yeah, here they are a LOT better than that!

Did you report that to Craigslist? That is super illegal, and they should get on them for it pretty quick!

Having the same trouble with Phoenix. Have you tried a Leasing Agent? We found one with Coldwell Banker and we just love her!
