You know, sometimes bug collectors freeze bugs to slow them down, but not necessarily kill them. My dad did that in college, when he collected them for a class. They may not be dead! But, I could be wrong too. I'm not really and expert in this either. Just thought, you may still have some hope. You could always give them the gift and get more caterpillars later. :) Merry Christmas
