Hypothetical...

So, say you're at the grocery store. It was hard to get there, what with the children and all, but you finally made it. You didn't take a list, because you're an idiot, but you're pretty sure you have everything you need to make some good meals for your meal deprived family (Cheerios, anyone?). So you are at the cash register loading your groceries onto the conveyor belt and as you lift your bag of bakery fresh rolls they all tumble out onto the floor. The Wal-Mart floor.

Do you

1- stick them on top of the candybars and pretend they're not yours.

2- buy them and throw them away later, it's not like you can just wash them off. You can't wash bread you know.

3- buy them and eat them later, because really, it's not like you are going to make it to the store again today before you make your french dip sandwiches and that roast in the fridge isn't getting any younger.

4- pretend you don't notice and carry on, leaving the rolls on the floor

5- give them to the cashier and ask for him to have someone get you new ones.

I know this may not be a dilemma to some of you, but just perchance it ever comes up, I am curious what you would do.

I bought the rolls and now am in a raging moral debate about if I can still use them. Logic tells me I shouldn't but my craving for AuJus sandwiches tells me I can suck it up and deal with it. Thirty second rule, right?

Dang, I was hoping you did number five where we get non-floor rolls for dinner. Does this mean I should plan on stopping for rolls on my way home? I guess one other option is that maybe we could wash these rolls right before we eat them. They're actually getting dipped in liquid anyway, in this case. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

I would have handed them to the cashier and asked them to get me new ones. Maybe the bag was defective and it wasn't your fault. Also I would totally use them. Just toast the bread and call it good.

ACK! Wal-mart floor? You risk hepatitis if you eat it, brushed off or not. I would have given them to the cashier. I've turned into a no-nonsense kind of girl lately. Or rude. One of the two.

Given these choices I would give them to the cashier, however in the moment when it happened I may have been flustered and just bought them. Also, you totally shouldn't eat them, but I probably would, all the while telling myself that a small dose of dirt and germs will just make mine and my children's immune systems stronger.

All I have to say is ew.

Ew to the rolls falling on the floor.
Ew to the germs clinging to the rolls.
And EEEWWWWWWWWW!!!! To Blaine suggesting that you wash them off!

*gag* *gag* *gag*

(but I'm sure the meat and dip is delicious)

If I had them already at home like you, I would use them. Come on, germs do not cling to dry things that were dropped on the floor for 2 seconds. Maybe they'll have a little good clean dirt on them, but you are not going to get a disease.
But for the sake of the hypothetical, I would have gone number 5 and gotten new ones. It's just a casualty of running a grocery store, they have to plan on those expenses.

You missed option #6, which is to have never gone to Wal-Mart in the first place. You would have had a courteous checker who would have willingly OFFERED to get you new rolls and sent the bagger to get them. Oh, except that the bag probably wouldn't have come open in the first place had it not been a Wal-Mart bag. OK, I'm done now.

Assuming there is no option #6, I'd have gone with #5. But no use crying over spilt milk. I suppose now that you've got them, I'd just give 'em a good zap in the microwave. I'm sure M would kill me for saying it, but there it is. I'm seriously like the least germophobic person EVER I think. Thanks for coming over to my house anyway.

#8 Feed them to the birds and go back and buy some new ones.

I'd probably eat them, but I have a stomach of Iron. Although, it is a walmart floor....(or any grocery store) and not my kitchen floor, where everything dropped is fair game. Hmmm, I would have waited to tell my husband until after he ate them. That would probably be it.

I was waiting for your comment Gretchen~!

I have to say though, it is my fault about the bag. It was one of those where I chose my own rolls and then I just picked up the bag upside down or something and they all tumbled out.

And Jeannie wins the extra prize because that is exactly my plan! Want to go and feed the ducks with me anyone?

number 5 for sure. That's why they employ people, even if it is Walmart.

Back in the day I would have eaten them without too much hesitation. These days, for some reason, I'm more squeemish about stuff like this. Even feeding them to the birds means you're touching them and getting Wal-Mart floor germs all over you! I know, ridiculous, right? Oh, take me back to my carefree days when I'd swallow potatoe bugs whole just to impress my cousins!

I have to say that is an annoying dilemma- but I would have probably asked for a new bag. However, I might toast the rolls, and say I baked the germs off them- and now they are o.k. to eat. Toasted rolls work great for french dip sandwiches! Oh, and I would love the wheat pancake recipe. Email it to me if you get a chance- thanks! (brooklynnster@gmail.com)
