Fe Fi Faux Pas

We had the opportunity to be hosts for Blaine's employer this weekend. This involves taking potential employees out and around town and to dinner etc. It's extra fun when the recruit has a wife because I get to be in on all of the action. So we were all at this nice dinner on Friday night and I was kind of situated in a weird spot right in the middle of the two tables in our group. I was going back and forth between conversations and trying to be socially delightful (which is hard for someone who's social calendar is full of things like going to Chick-fil-a and wiping snot off of children's faces during dinner). I was in a conversation on the one table and then overheard someone on the other table say, "I don't like pop". I thought, well now, that's a shame. I love pop. I should really say something in defense of pop. So I leaned over and like a drunkerd said, a little too loudly and robustly, "Well? Have you ever tried Cherry Coke??" the conversation halted like, instantaneously and Blaine, who had been involved in the conversation, looked at me like I was insane. Then after a minute, I was like "well? Have ya?" and the guy responded with saying something like, "I said I don't like hip hop". Awkward. They were totally talking about music and I totally halted two separate conversations to blurt out random comments about caffeinated beverages at a table full of BYU people. Awesome. Blaine said this might be the last time I get to "help" him with his job. If he still has a job.

Aren't you worried that these folks will now think they'll become caffeine--drinking sinners if they move to Texas? :)

how funny.. just so you know- I am addicted to mountain dew and my mom still thinks caffeine=beer, so it is pretty fun to tease her, I am the queen of saying dumb things cuz mostly I am naive and dense so I have had many moments like that. At least we can all laugh about it even if they didn't think it was too funny :)

THAT's funny. I have a hard time not wanting to jump in on conversations like that, too. I wish I had been there to see everyone's faces and to have experienced the awkward silence while everyone tried to figure out what just happened.

Very funny telling of the story Kris. I don't think it was nearly as awkward as you felt it was. I didn't even understand why you thought it was such a big deal until I read your brilliant retelling here and began to understand what you felt like you were going through. Anyway, I don't think anyone even noticed, if it makes you feel any better. And it turns out that that person indeed doesn't really like pop either so...you're good.
